Launched in June 2017, Barti Rum is the result of a lifelong obsession with stories from the sea and over a year’s work experimenting with seaweed and spiced rum. After a series of late nights at the time of his second daughter being born, Jonathan found himself captivated by a story he’d newly discovered; one of adventure, Pembrokeshire, passion and the deep blue sea. That of Barti Ddu.
Black Bart, or Barti Ddu, is the name taken by the most successful pirate of all time, a pirate from Little Newcastle in Pembrokeshire called John Roberts, who later became known as Bartholemew Roberts and then finally after his death, Black Bart. This pirate not only created the Jolly Roger and the ‘pirate code’, but he dressed in silk robes and had a band play music for battle. It’s apparent that many fellow Welshmen sailed the seas as pirates during the sixteen hundreds, not least Captain Howell Davis of Milford Haven and Captain Morgan of Llanrumney in Cardiff.
Combine the astonishing tale of a young lad from West Wales with a beautifully balanced recipe of vanilla, clove, ginger and orange, blended with the mellowing notes of laver, all of which are flavours derived from traditional Welsh cooking, and you will get this very special Barti Spiced. This quality fusion perfectly signals a nod to Wales’s strong historical link to piracy.[less]
