Fishing and Foraging Wales
“We love Matt’s passion and enthusiasm for the wildlife and landscapes that surround him, and are truly inspired by his creativity and expert knowledge. His ethos of returning to the way our ancestors would have gathered wild produce and incorporating these foods into modern cooking is fascinating. Combining fine dining with education, Matt’s experience days are not to be missed and we are thrilled to be able to offer these unique days out at Discover Delicious.”
My name is Matt Powell. I am a chef, forager and saltwater bass lure angling guide. Fishing and Foraging Wales was created to bring all of my passions together and to bring fishing and foraging enthusiasts the best experience that my skills and the Welsh coast can offer. I want to share with you the places in Wales where you can really escape and leave behind the hardships of the fast-paced lives which most of us face in today’s modern, sometimes crazy and hectic world. The places where you can truly get away from it all, reflect and relax.
We are blessed with natural beauty on our coastlines as well as a richness of wildlife. Learning foraging skills brings you closer to your surroundings and closer to understanding the fragile Eco-systems that are all around us. There is so much we can take and learn from the land and, of course, in a totally sustainable way.
I was born in Wales, but I spent many years working outside my beloved country, working in various Michelin starred restaurants from the age of 17. During this time, I worked hard to perfect my skills and become the best chef I could possibly be.
Cooking is my passion, but I have always loved fishing and have taken a keen interest in foraging from a young age. I have been fishing for bass on the Welsh coast since my late teens, and I learnt a great deal about foraging for wild plants at a young age from being out in the countryside and from my grandparents. The smell of the gorse flowers and the sound of the Sky larks still remind me of the days I spent with them, and hark back to my younger days.
I moved back to Wales, returning to my roots, to create something unique and something that was culturally important to Wales, not only in the present day, but for the future also.
I am the first and only qualified Saltwater Angling Guide with Natural Resources Wales and the Wild Fishing Wales guiding qualification scheme, and I offer a range of saltwater angling experiences.
In addition, I also offer a variety of foraging courses, where I share my knowledge and experience of foraging in the wild, followed by a multi course dinner prepared by myself after we have gathered the goods on your foraging journey. For my food creations I only ever use produce from Wales; from the humble acorn and gorse flower to the very best mountain lamb and pot caught lobster, the pristine wild mushrooms that litter our woodlands or the forgotten wild herbs that time and most people have forgotten. The rules are we only take what we need and we always pick sensibly and never from the root.
I hope my story has inspired you to one day come and join me on my wonderful journey.
"Everything we need surrounds us. Most people have forgotten that it's there but I look to the past to guide towards a better future"
