Our Story

The Coconut Kitchen started with a catering trailer on a campsite in the beautiful seaside village of Abersoch in North Wales. That was in 2006 before the street food trend had caught on! It was always Preechaya’s passion to give people good quality, healthy and freshly cooked Thai food and really made it work, even though we were just in a trailer. Preechaya, head chef and creator of all the sauces, trained as a chef in Thailand and was taught many different recipes by her mother who was a cookery teacher in Pak Chong, two hours north of Bangkok.

Preechaya then spent four years as a Chef de Partie in a top London gastro pub where the menu centred on European and Asian fusion cuisine.

Following the success of the catering trailer, in 2007 we moved to the 40-seater restaurant in Abersoch and won “Best Oriental Restaurant in Wales” at The Food Awards Wales in 2015 and 2016.

As we had so many tourists as customers they kept asking us to open up a restaurant near them in Manchester, Chester, Liverpool, London etc. as they loved the food so much. But we didn’t want to leave Wales, and running a restaurant, whilst being very rewarding is also quite stressful!

So instead of opening more restaurants, we went down the route of bottling our pastes and sauces so the customers could make our food at home in their own kitchens. Thus, The Coconut Kitchen Sauce brand was launched at the IFE show in London in March 2013. Our products can now be found in about 300 UK independent shops and we export to Germany, France and Ireland.

In January 2018 after an opportunity fell into our laps we made the decision to sell the restaurant and concentrate on the ever-popular sauce side of the business. This has given us more time to develop additional recipes and products and, while we miss the restaurant, it’s something we will maybe look at doing again in a couple of years and in the meantime we are ‘popping up’ in venues around the local area and country.

But as you can see, our heritage is definitely thoroughbred. All of our products are restaurant quality and it’s always our aim to allow the customer to make amazing quality food in their own home, easily!
